When it comes to managing our money, sometimes the best advice comes from those who are walking the same path. Our recent RiseUp Challenge sparked an engaging conversation in our community, where members shared their favourite ways to save on travel, shopping and other everyday expenses. Here’s our pick of the best money-saving wisdom.
Travel tips: Stretching your budget on the go
Travel is one of those areas where costs can easily spiral out of control, especially when you’re trying to make the most of your time away. But our community has some clever strategies to keep those expenses in check:
- Save for your travel in a dedicated pot: Chloe suggests using tools like Monzo pots to save specifically for holiday expenses, making it easier to manage and budget for trips. She uses the roundups feature to further boost her holiday fund.
- Save big on flights and hotels: Daniela suggests booking flights last-minute with airlines like Tui, which often have “amazing deals” as departure dates approach. Joanna recommends contacting hotels directly for bookings, as it can be “cheaper than booking.com.”
- Be mindful of your spending while away: Lara said the mindset of “I’m on holiday, I need to enjoy myself” can lead to overspending. She emphasised the importance of setting limits even when travelling.
- Use discounted travel apps: For those looking to save on fuel, Joanna recommended the PetrolPrices app, which can “save you up to £200 a year on fuel.” For train travel, Alice recommends using Split Tickets through the Trainline app, which saves her nearly £10 on a return ticket from Brighton to London. Chloe also highlights the value of a 26-30 Railcard, which saved her “£130 in rail travel in the past two years.”
Shopping smart: Stretching every pound
Shopping is an area where many of us find it challenging to stay within our budget, but our community has shared some smart strategies:
- Make the most of cashback. Amelia introduced us to the JamDoughnut app, which provides cashback when purchasing gift cards for various shops and restaurants. “It gives you discounts and instant cashback… you can then take it as cash or use it to buy more.”
- Shop where the deals are: Daniela, who confessed to overspending on a Nike sale, made a conscious effort to return items and recover funds. Darren plans to switch from Tesco to Lidl after realising how much he could save.
- Use loyalty apps: “I have an app for all the supermarkets on my phone,” said Daniela. Chloe adds that using Sainsbury’s SmartShop scan feature helps her monitor her spending in real-time, making it easier to stick to her budget.
- Save on your food shop: Ele suggests Cherrypick for grocery shopping, which helps her avoid distractions and save “about £40 a shop” by sticking to a list and using click-and-collect services.
- Embrace second-hand shopping: Chloe is a fan of Vinted and charity shops, noting that “most of my wardrobe is second-hand now.” For tech needs, she recommends BackMarket.com for refurbished items, where you can also trade in old devices for discounts.
Miscellaneous hacks: The little things add up
Sometimes, it’s the small, everyday decisions that can make the biggest difference in our financial lives:
- Get discounted cinema tickets: Daniela shared a hack for cinema lovers – use Compare the Meerkat for 2-for-1 cinema tickets: “You only need to purchase insurance cover with Compare the Meerkat to get these rewards, and it costs as little as £1.99 for a year.” For additional savings, they suggest bringing snacks from home, cutting a typical £40 cinema trip for two to under £20.
- Manage your coffee budget: Matt keeps his coffee spending in check by topping up a prepaid Starbucks card with a set amount each month. “Once the balance is down, there’s no more topping up until next month,” he says. This, coupled with using a reusable cup for discounts, keeps his coffee habit from derailing his budget.
- Hack your subscriptions: Daniela shares a clever strategy for getting the best deals on meal kits like HelloFresh. “I cancel one [account], use the other, and then wait for the first account to send me offers to lure me back.”
Our community has shown that with a bit of creativity and discipline, it’s possible to save money in almost every area of life. Whether you’re travelling, shopping, or just managing your everyday expenses, these tips are a testament to the power of collective wisdom. So, why not give some of these strategies a try? You might find that saving money becomes a fun and rewarding challenge in itself.
